The Media or Government- Who Has the Power?

First, my thoughts and prayers go with all of the families who lost loved ones in all of the recent shootings.

I think the people who blame the media and the government for the issues today have already lost all the control you ever had.
I will elaborate a little. By saying the media and government are responsible for whats wrong with this country is basically saying they are in control of it and have the power. Therefore if you blame them and not the people or persons actually responsible then are giving up control and responsibility for your fellow countrymen and their action. The government has already won.

We are responsible for our own happiness.  We cannot wait and let others make us happy.
I would like to think that I have power over my own life and the I do not let the government or media control my life, beyond the rules the government has set up to supposedly keep me safe. If we do not think the government is keeping us safe then its time to change the government, right?  However, who is to say if that were to happen it would be so much better than the one we have now?
It's the governments responsibility to govern, to make rules, to make sure they are enforced. When someone breaks those very rules and we blame the actual breaking of the rules on the government, are we saying that the rules are only there to be broken?  Are people saying the government is failing at the job we appointed it too?  What exactly do we expect our government to accomplish. We gripe when they are strict, when they are too lax, or when they are not doing exactly what we think they should, then blame them for failing?

How, exactly did they fail?  Were they not lax enough for you?  Or was the government supposed to be strict?

I do not think there is a happy medium here. We cannot expect them to be strict when we want them to be only when it pertains to us and not other individuals.

You cannot expect them to stop the shootings when so many people in America are fighting against gun control.
Either you stop people from getting guns or you do not.

Yoda said it best with

“Do or do not... there is no try.”
Who is to decide which people are safe with guns?
The media reports what it thinks people want to see, mostly death, robberies, and destruction.

The following was supposedly said by Morgan Freeman :

TURN OFF THE NEWS.......

Morgan Freeman's brilliant take on what happened yesterday :

"You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single *victim* of Columbine? Disturbed
people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news."

End (supposed) Quote

To me that is not the media's fault. If people would not watch the news when they report certain stories a certain way then they might report them a different way to get viewers back. That sounds like a flaw of the American public. They are the ones who turn it on and watch it like the world will end if they do not.
I do agree with him that America needs to turn off their TV  and start supporting mental health instead of gun control.

I have mental health issues of my own and I know how important it is to stay in therapy and on my meds. I am not a violent person yet just one week off my meds and I turn into a bitch.  I cannot imagine how it would be with someone with worse issues than mine.  Although I was disturbed today to learn than out of all the shootings and such in the last few years, the people had mental issues that are often not considered as severe as mine. I suppose some other would consider them more severe, and then still more like myself thinks that they may be misdiagnosed.
